BANGKIT
role: production designer, story originator
Bangkit was a Final Year Project done for our diploma in Digital Film & Television in Temasek Polytechnic. Inspired loosely by my grandparents, Bangkit is a story about a Malay baker who has to overcome her newfound hatred for the Chinese race and her own demons after her bakery shop was destroyed in the 1964 racial riots. She must get rid of her hatred and find herself again or risk destroying her family and never getting her bakery back ever again.
The film explores racial tensions and shows the riots that took place in Singapore in 1964, aiming to show how important racial harmony is in Singapore especially when there are still many people in the country facing oppression because of the colour of their skin. The film also wanted to highlight a woman's resilience and her ability to rise against all odds. As the production designer, recreating the interior of a 1960s Malay kampong house as well as its exteriors for the riot scenes was the main highlight. We also recreated a small kampong drinks stall to be destroyed during the riots. The film was sponsored and done in partnership with Singapore Discovery Center and will be screened there for a year starting May 2019.
